OFT Examines relationship between Estate Agent and Broker

The Relationship between Mortgage brokers and Estate Agents have will come under scrutiny next month as part of an Office of Fair trading (OFT) market study into home buying and selling.

Links between agents and surveyors, solicitors and other professional advisers will come within the scope of the study. It also plans to consider competition on price and quality between service providers, principally estate agents; the prospects for entry by new business models, including internet based business models whether the existing regulatory framework provides the right balance between protecting consumers who are buying or selling a home and ensuring that the market remains open to competition and innovation.

Heather Clayton, senior direct of infastructure at the OFT says: “With the economic downturn, we need to ensure that consumers receive that consumers receive a good service when buying or selling a home, from a market that is competitve, innovative and well functioning.”

Connells Announce Yearly profits of £37 million

While numerous estate agents closed down over the course of last year, the Connells group have announced a huge pre-tax profit of £31 million.

The 37 million profit is from the whole group of the business said group chairman Steven Shipperley if you were to discount the profit made from the sale of out rightmove shares and one off profits of a non trading nature then the prodit figure would still be over £10 million.

Shipperley further stressed that the £10 millino profit figure quoted is after the deduction of all costs and provisions relating to measures such as branch closures and staff redundancy costs which Connells made during 2008 ‘After adjusting for non trading costs. out underlying Group operated profit was £24 million he added.

Estate Agent steals £37k!

Agent steals £37k from business after it goes into administration.

A former managing director of a Rotherwell agency, which went out of business back in 2007, has appeared in court charged with stealing around £37,000.

Robert Chambers is accused of stealing sums of money ranging from £525 to £13,950 from the company after being told by HM Revenue and Customs to wind the company up two years ago.

The cash is owed to 11 people who are believed to be former Cream tenants and landlords who let properties through the company.

After numerous clients began to complain to police in 2007 saying that they had lost hundreds of pounds in deposits and rent owed to them by the agency, police issued a warrant for Chambers,

Tenants claimed they had paid cash deposits which they lost when the firm went under, while landlords complained of having trouble getting rent payments from the estate agent company.

Agents Issued ASBOS for illegal signing

Councillors at Harrow council are so fed up with estate agents ‘fly boarding’ houses that they aren’t selling in order to increase brand recognition that they are preparing to hand out ‘retail asbos’ to unlawful agents. Under the Responsible Retailer Act, introduced last year to crack down on shops with block the pavements with goods or rubbish, the council will begin doling out the fines and will destroy the boards at properties that are not for sale or let. In one case agents actually attached three for sale boards to a street light!

Its one thing to say this property has a lot of natural sunlight but we think this might be going a little too far, as its beleived to have the most windows of any building its size in the world.

Sporting over 1,000 windows. The nine story building was built in China by Kooky Japanese architect Sako Keiichiro. Accordin to Today Morning, people walking by the unusual building have said it makes them feel dizzy if they look at it for too long, with one room apparently having 21 windows alone.

None of the rooms in the building are completely square or rectangular corridors wind around and between rooms and each floor features a mini garden.

‘its like a maze inside’ said one construction worker who added that it was the most difficult and time consuming project he had ever worked on.
